AMERICAN HIKING SOCIETY’S CORE VALUES:
The Intrinsic Value of Hiking:
Hiking has long been an important outdoor activity, whether as a means of exploration, exercise or reflection. The act of setting foot down a path through natural areas provides unparalleled opportunities to build the human spirit, improve physical fitness and increase environmental awareness. Hiking offers all Americans a healthy, enjoyable and relatively simple way to deepen their connections to nature, people and place.
Conservation through Recreation:
As a national conservation-based recreation organization, AHS work in partnership to build, maintain and protect hiking trails and their natural corridors. This allows current and future generations to experience the many joys and benefits of hiking and are inspired to protect this legacy.
Stewardship: AHS programs are built around the concept of fostering and supporting trail stewardship and the public lands through which they travel. AHS accomplish this by promoting a sense of responsibility and culture of service among their individual members and member organizations and in the hiking community at large.
Sustainability: AHS support construction and maintenance of trails that limit hikers’ impact on the land and require minimal attention to maintain the integrity and safety of the tread. They promote Leave No Trace ethics to ensure that natural ecosystems and trail environments remain viable and healthy.
Through adaptability, responsiveness and a commitment to continuous improvement, AHS will remain a dynamic and relevant national organization. Their work is results-oriented, partnership driven and integral to the viability, success and future of their constituents – the hiking community.

1THING featured organization for the month of December isPure Earth. Thanks to our sister cluster Entercom Seattle. Pure Earth helps bring attention to the growing problem of ‘Pollution’, and raises awareness and ways to help stop the waste. Here’s the breakdown of what we’re all up against, when it comes to ‘Pollution’ and how it’s harmful to our lives… literally….
What’s the Problem?
Toxic pollutants at contaminated sites affect the health of more than 200 million people worldwide. Women and children are especially at risk suffering neurological and immune system damage and an early death. The number of people affected is comparable to HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria combined. Plus, solving pollution problems usually promotes, rather than inhibits, economic growth. Yet, pollution is one of the most under-reported and underfunded problems in the world.
Why Support Pure Earth?
Pure Earth is an international non-profit organization dedicated to solving pollution problems in low- and middle-income countries, where human health is most affected by pollution. Pure Earth devises clean-up strategies, empowers local champions and secures support from national and international partnerships. Since its inception in 1999, Pure Earth has completed more than 80 clean-up projects in 20 countries. This has reduced exposure to toxins for local populations, especially children.
Share Pure Earth’s posts on social media. Use Twitter @PureEarthNow, Facebook, and LinkedIn to raise the profile of toxic pollution, which disproportionately kills those in low and middle-income countries.
Make a donation. Better yet, organize a group of coworkers to make donations. Ask your employer to match it.
Join the Pure Earth Corps of volunteers. Work solo, with a group of colleagues or friends, adopt a project, and raise funds.
Host a “Toxic Cocktail Party” educational event. Pure Earth does the work; you create the guest list. Artisanal “toxic” cocktails are created just for you!

I never knew this could be a Thing, but it’s definitely a #1Thing. Thanks to friends from the MIT Media Lab in Boston, Anirudh Sharma and Nikhil Kaushik inventedAir-Ink, a professional art supply made directly from car exhaust and soot.
cars release about 20% of the world’s carbon dioxcide
people breathe in an average of 2 gallons of polluted air a minute
Sharma, Kaushik, and the rest of their team at Graviky Labs have cleaned 1.6 trillion liters of air since officially capturing pollution last June. This is impressive and what they do w/ the exhaust and soot turn it into a work of art literally. Environmental Art... “The more Air-Ink we use, the less pollution we breathe—simple,” Click here to see some of the Amazing art and how it’s done! #1Thing that is helping Mama Earth and getting lots cool points too!

Happy Summer! Here are some Summertime Recyclng Tips! #KeepAustinBeautifulIt’s a#1Thing we can all do.
Many will be packing a bag to head out to the beach, pool, hiking, camping… getting out to enjoy the Summertime heat. Recycling and waste reduction is an important part of Summertime fun. Keep Mama Earth as clean as you can while having fun outside. It’s #1Thing we can all do.
Here are some tips for a successful 1Thing way to #KeepAustinBeautiful :
*Bring reusable bags to pack Thingies in. If you get plastic bags, bring them home and recycle them at a local drop-off location.
When I go to Omaha, NE w/ honey Ted to visit family, we use our reusable bags for shopping and just carting our stuff around. It’s starting to catch on up there. They aren’t as #1Thing cool as the ATX area!
#Pack meals, snacks and drinks in reusable containers. Cut down on plastics, styrofoam and paper, especially when road tripping. Pack it with you. If you run across some trouble, it could also come in handy.
My honey Ted was coming from Omaha, to Austin a couple of winters ago, and ice/ snow packed up on IH-35, which brought traffic to a standstil outside of Dallas. A semi was stuck in it, and blocking traffic. He had to sit on the road for about 18 hours. He was thankful he brought his reusable bag/ cooler which had sandwich makings and drinks in there. He was set for the emergency as far as nurishment. A #1Thing that really can be a lifesaver for everyone including Mama Earth.
Keep 2 bags w/ you to separate trash and recyclables. Something you might not think about, but extremely helpful while road tripping, camping and long event activities. it’s done and you won’t have to worry about doing it later.

Thursday (6/15) is National Dump The Pump Day. A day to give the car / vehicle a break and try using public transportation. This can help several areas in your life
4 Great reasons why Dumping the Pump is a good thing for you, others and Mama Earth!
1.) Riding public transportation can save you money. A study showed a 2 person household that went from 2 cars to using 1 saved more than $9,700 a year
2.) Using public transportation also helps ATX grow and prosper. Every $1 invested in public transportation, $4 is returned in economic returns.
3.) It’s a Big #1Thing too. You cut your carbon footprint by not driving and also helps air quality. Lots of #1Thing goodness for Mama Earth, cutting down the amount of vehicles on the road.
4.) It can help your health too especially when it comes to Stress. Not having to bother w/ driving in traffic yourself, you aren’t as rung up. You can chill and leave the driving to the city. Less Stress is does the Body & Mind good
Click here for more! Try it out on Thursday… ‘Dump the Pump ATX!’ If no on public transportation, maybe carpooling….
